Zebra Mussel Veliger Screening Program – Volunteers Needed!
Lake Sullivan is at high risk for zebra mussels. The Lake Sullivan Association has learned from Morrison County that they are offering, at no cost, to train individuals and provide equipment for specialized sampling to catch the zebra mussel in its earliest life stage (veliger). If we catch zebra mussels at this life stage prior to adult mussels, we have a window of opportunity to treat for them. This zebra mussel sampling is above and beyond the sampling we did last summer and will start again this coming summer.
Periodic water column testing is done in late June and July, and the samples are sent off to a lab for microscopic analysis for veligers. The County will supply the equipment needed for sample gathering and the will cover the cost of lab analysis.
The county will also provide training one evening in June.
If you are willing to step forward and help to protect our precious lake we will forward your name and contact information to the county. Click here to send us an email indicating your are willing to help save Lake Sullivan from zebra mussels!
